Full, Conscious, Active:  Participation as Ministry
Monsignor Andrew G. Varga, D. Min.

Whenever we talk about the “ministries” of the liturgy, we seem to focus on the relatively few people who “do things” for the rest of us: lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of Communion; servers and ushers; musicians.  But what about the “rest of us,” the assembly? What do we “do” for the sake of the liturgy and for one another?  To talk about “full, conscious, and active participation” is really to speak of what is the “ministry” of the assembly: rooted in baptism, celebrated in life and prayer, sent forth in mission.

Monsignor Andrew G. Varga was ordained in 1978 for the Diocese of Bridgeport, CT and currently serves as pastor of St. Luke Parish.  He has long been a presenter in the work of pastoral liturgy and Christian Initiation. He serves as a Board member for the FDLC and is a team member for the North American Forum on the Catechumenate.

WORKSHOPS
Each workshop is in 2 parts

Session 1:  11:15 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.

Session 2:   1:30 P.M. -    2:45 P.M.

1. What’s the New Roman Missal All About?
(St. Rita Family Life Center)

What IS this all about?  You may be surprised to know that a lot of the “new” Roman Missal that we are “awaiting” is already in place!   Let’s explore some history and method that lies behind the development of the most important ritual text of our Roman Catholic worship, as well as some practical considerations for its various ministries.

Presenter: Msgr. Andrew G. Varga, D. Min.
is the Keynote presenter for the Liturgy Day.

2. The New Roman Missal:
What Does It Have to Do with Me as a Catechist?
(St. Joseph Catholic Center Conference Room)

The publication of the new Roman Missal offers catechists an opportunity to energize their ministry in the area of liturgy.  The presentation covers background regarding the reasons for the changes in the new Missal texts, ways in which catechists can use the new texts as a means to form children and young people in the primacy of Sunday and practical ideas to use in a catechetical setting to develop children and young people in the Word, the Eucharist, and  for Mission.

Presenter: Sister Sandra DeMasi, SSJ,
former Director of Worship for the Archdiocese of Newark, serves on the FDLC Board of Directors and is a consultant for RCL Benziger Religion Publishers.

3.  Liturgical Music and the New Missal Translations:
Challenges, Opportunities, and Resources
(St. Rita Church)

This workshop will explore the challenges and opportunities that the new translations for the liturgy will bring to the ministry of liturgical music: some background, strategies for catechesis and implementation, and the sharing of musical examples and new contemporary settings and revisions that will be coming our way in the months ahead. Time allotted for questions, sharing, learning, and singing through samples of some new mass settings, as well as other new compositions.

Presenter: David Haas,
well-know composer and clinician, is the
Director of the Emmaus Center for Music, Prayer and Ministry.

Co-Sponsored by GIA Publications, Inc.
and the Cathedral Music Series.

The Saturday, October 9, Liturgy Day is sponsored by
the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions
and hosted by the Diocese of Alexnadria.
